Ukuleles strings were originally made from real gut, but now come in a range of materials. The most popular modern materials are Nylgut, which is a special nylon with similar properties to real gut, and fluoro carbon, which has a higher mass than conventional nylon, for a clearer tone and more precise intonation.

The most popular brands of ukulele strings are Aquila Strings, who make Ukulele Nylgut strings, Worth Strings, who make fluoro-carbon ukulele strings, and Ko'olau Gold, who make performance quality "Gold" nylon ukulele strings.

Ukulele strings are made for a range of ukuleles (Soprano Ukuleles, Concert Ukuleles, Tenor Ukuleles and Baritone Ukuleles) and ukulele tuning, including the traditional gCEA (High G); GCEA (Low G) for Soprano, Concert and Tenor Ukuleles; and DBGE for Baritone Ukuleles, and sometimes Tenor Ukuleles.
